Ahhh...Valentine's day. Prompting singles to commit suicide since...well...the Middle Ages. It's kind of funny we celebrate this holiday when historically, it involved the martyrdom of some beheaded dude or (if you're the cynical sort) the pagan she-wolf ritual of Lupercalia. *Wistful sigh* Romantic, don't you think?

It may come as a shock, but I actually like Valentine's Day. There aren't a lot of things I get "girly" about, but I do enjoy receiving flowers and chocolates. At the moment, I have a wonderful bouquet of red carnations and baby's breath sitting on my desk. I bought them myself at the store since my boyfriend is too lazy to wrestle with the florist shop this late in the season. As you can see, I like to recycle soda bottles. But my desk is clean...for once.

Heh. Many females turn their noses up at any flower that is not a rose...but I love all sorts of flowers! A flower is a flower. I wish people would get off their high-horses and think outside the box a little when it comes to valentine's day flowers. Roses are BORING. And often, too expensive! Do something different this year and get your sweety an iris! Or maybe a tulip. Hell, a bouquet of hand-picked wildflowers would be cool.

I dunno. What do you guys normally do for valentine's day?

I did not know I was a whiskey girl until my 23rd birthday last month. Thanks to that experience, I now have two new lovers in my life: Jack and Coke. I'm no stranger to hard liquor--normally tequila is my poison of choice, but damn, I have never been more wasted in my life than when I drink whiskey! After 3 shots, I'm singing...crying...dancing...writing poetry...you name it. It is freaking awesome!

Whiskey has this strange effect on me...I feel...kinda sexxxy when I'm drunk on it. It opens me up, raw, and makes me float on a cloud. I was drinking a Jack and Coke yesterday and danced all night to Hooverphonic's "2 Wicky." That was the best night ever! This morning I woke up around 7:30am (a new record for me) with the itching feeling to write. Note to self: if ever in need of creative inspiration, drink a Jack and Coke while dancing to Hooverphonic!

Time for another status update! Sooo...what have I accomplished since my last update? Virtually nothing! Yay! Hurray for failure and mediocrity!

No new publications. In fact, I haven't even submitted anything to a publisher in months! Sorry, guys. I've been too busy finishing my novels. Yes. Plural. You read that right. I realize trying to finish two novels at the same time is INSANITY but I'm awesome like that. What can I say? I'm a masochist.

*Sigh* My dragon story has taken on a life of its own. I'm still trying to knock out the first chapter. My historical YA is completely on hold due to a serious case of writer's block. In fact, I'm writing the dragon story BECAUSE I have hit a such a big wall with my other one. I could try writing short stories--but I'm sort of short story'd out at the moment.

When I can figure out how to write the last 10K words of my YA WIP, I can stop obsessing! I'm like 73K words into it at the moment. When I do another project, I'll let you guys know. Until then, I'm going to wallow in my own worthlessness while watching a whole lot of daytime television. :)

Ovo, what?

So...yeah. My new year's resolution involved yet another diet change. No, no, I'm still abstaining from human flesh, but I've decided to take that first (hesitant) step toward veganism. Why? I need to lose the weight. And also, I've always been somewhat curious about playing for the other team.

I've been a vegetarian for about...hmmm...I'd say 8yrs now. Nothing fancy. Typical ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet here. However, I've been eating more cheese pizza and french fries than lentils and spinach. So yeah. Time to get my fat ass back into shape for 2012. (Sound familiar?)

I'm cutting dairy completely out of my diet for the month. I'll be an ovo-vegetarian for as long as I can possibly stand it. If I can do it for one month, I can do it for three. If I can do it for three months, I can do it for six, and so on. A personal challenge. Wish me luck. :)

This clip is hysterical. Miss Congeniality is the only Sandra Bullock movie I can tolerate without wanting to kill myself afterwards. I love the part when the guy chews on the candy bar, bwahaha! I lol'd so hard! But I wonder why guys do shit like this? They get all serious and act like they're going to do something sexy, and then they totally back out of the moment and pretend like nothing happened. Why do men DO this????

Ladies have you ever experienced anything like this? Annoying, isn't it? The most recent scenario happened to me last year during my final semester of college. There was this much-older, much-more-married, psychology professor I was sort of crushing on at the time, and he would sort of flirt with the idea but NEVER take it any further. Which irritated the HELL out of me. If he had just come out with it, I would not have cared. But FUCK, ambiguity kills me!

I mean, he literally made me squirm in my seat from across the room just by looking at me--that's how ridiculous the situation was. Only once did he confront me in the hallway after class one day. The suddenness of it all made me gasp, but he hesitated to follow-through, and then, just as suddenly, he sprinted off in the opposite direction and ignored me for the rest of the semester afterwards.

Looking back on it now, my obvious sexual attraction must have amused him because I feel as if he got some sort of sadistic thrill out of fucking with my head. Must be quite an ego-boost for a guy in his late 30s to have the attention of a 22yr old girl. Men are pricks!

Allergies

I hate having allergies...but not for the reason you think. Most people are allergic to pollen, dust, cat dander, etc, but nope, not me. I have to be allergic to wonderful things like fruit. Yes. Fruit. I am allergic to all kinds of fruit except citrus foods.

Why? Because I have this thing called Fruit Pollen Syndrome. Which sucks. Because I love eating fruit. *Sigh* And as a vegetarian, fruits and veggies make up most of my diet! :(

I'm also allergic to latex. So no wild kinky sex costumes for me, unfortunately.

Bless her, hahaha! Almost every single comment in this video has been said to me in one form or another over the years. I absolutely LOVE how before a white person says anything racist, they start off by saying: "Not to be racist but..." or "I'm not a racist but..." *nostalgic sigh* I've been a subscriber to chescaleigh's videos for a while now and so I watched this thing before it went viral and ended up on the Anderson show.

What makes me laugh is the nuclear fall-out from some white people (particularly white girls) who are getting all up in arms about this and calling the creator of this video a "racist." Hahaha, um...what? You DO realize this video is making FUN of the racist ignoramuses, right? She's being facetious!

Oh the irony! The irony!

My favorite defensive reaction is: "OMG. If a white girl did a video about the same thing, the world would explode!" Which inherently implies a sense of entitlement based around the question: "Why can she (as a black person) point out racism to white people but I (as a white person) can't point out racism to blacks?" Ok, let me answer this incessant question that has been nagging the subconscious minds of ignorant white people once and for all. You ready? Because reverse racism doesn't exist! Black people can not and do not "oppress" white people on any scale...so...um yeah, your misguided defensiveness is irrelevant to the discussion.

If you're going to get mad at the video, get mad at the fact these white girls DO exist--not that the creator of this video pointed them out to you!

Cannibalistic Confessions

*Sigh* Sometimes living with someone can be tough. I love my boyfriend and everything...but there are days I honestly want to roundhouse kick him in the head. Mostly over the TV. As I type this, he is hogging the remote control so he can watch his pointless car shows.

Why do men insist on watching these shows about tools? Or fixing houses or cars? It's not like they are going to get up off their butts and FIX anything around the house. So why? But I guess it is manly enough just to sit on the couch and passively watch OTHER men do these things.

I should just eat all of the men on the planet. Life would be so much simpler without them.

Keeping on schedule

I've been doing pretty good about posting regularly, don't you think? I'm proud of myself. I kinda like my schedule: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I'm wondering though if I should do something on the weekend, though. Hrmmm.

It's hard finding things to write about every week. In all honesty ya'll, most of the time I'm just winging it! I don't have anything all that important to say, but I do appreciate all my followers and all of your comments. I'm bad about replying back to most of them, but I'm going to do better about keeping up with these things this year. Can't make any promises, though, so don't hold your breath on it! :D

12/11 Media of the month: Indigo Blue

By "media of the month" I really mean: "When I actually get around to posting something--which usually entails once every three months! Yay!" Yeah. I'm terrible at keeping up with these things, but that's why you guys love me, right? Inconsistency and procrastination are my most charming character flaws!

Back to the subject at hand...ahem. *cough*

I've written several posts about comic books on this blog. I love reading comics. I always have. As a closeted bi teen in my jr. high school days, I read an awful lot of yaoi manga (if you don't know what "yaoi" is, click on the link and get wiki'd). Secretly, I always wished for lesbian-themed, or "yuri," titles, but no such luck back then. No one I knew read/talked about yuri. In fact, I didn't even know what "yuri" was until my final years of high school! I just assumed (as is the case with fiction books) lesbian-themed mangas were either rare, written by heterosexual men, and or nonexistent.

Indigo Blue (written and illustrated by the wonderfully talented Ebine Yamaji) is my first real josei yuri manga. I've never been a fan of the shojo sparkly stuff. And although I read my fair share of gender-benders with slight yuri elements (like Ranma 1/2, W Juliet, Beauty is the Beast, etc.) I never actually read a straight-up lesbian love story before. I can't begin to tell you how much this manga impacted me. I actually cried while I was reading it. And I've never cried while reading a manga before.

I'm actually surprised I love this manga so much. Normally this sort of thing would irritate the HELL out of me! First off, the art isn't very pretty. I don't like how Ebine Yamaji draws frontal faces--somehow they all look like frogs. But because the artwork is so simplistic, it forces the reader to focus on the story. And after a while, the simple art style grows on you.

Secondly, I am easily irritated by the "indecisive bisexual female" who falls for both a man and a woman at the same time. However, all that aside, this is a very well-written work. The story is told honestly and truthfully from a poignant and character-driven point of view. I really wanted to hate Rutsu, the bisexual main character, but I couldn't. I guess I saw too much of myself in her. And honestly, reading this made me realize how much of an asshole I was in jr. high and high school. I think most bisexual women struggle with their sexual identity at some point in their lives, and in that process of self-discovery, sometimes hurt people inadvertently.

Even now, I don't think I've ever had a formal "girlfriend" before. Which is strange because I was asked to prom by a girl and on numerous occasions I kissed/fooled around with girls. Many of my friends were out-lesbians and I always found myself instinctively drawn to them. However I refused to believe I was in romantic situations--even when the girl expressed blatant romantic interest in me, I never interpreted her feelings as such. Perhaps deliberately, because I was too much of a coward to acknowledge my own sexuality back then. The character Tamaki reminds me of one such girl I knew in high school. Looking back on it now, I was a fucking idiot. Only as I continued to fall deeper into the story, did I realize for the first time how carelessly I must have hurt this girl. Much like how Rutsu hurt Ryuuji in the manga. Only different...because this was real life.

I will read more of Ebine Yamaji's work because she is a fantastic story-teller. I recommend Indigo Blue to anyone who enjoys josei mangas, and although the story is about lesbi women in particular, men also play an important role too. :)

Christmas songs you love to hate

1. OMFG. If I have to hear this song one more time at the mall, I will literally stab a small child with a spork at the Santa Claus picture station and rip off the little Elves' heads!

2. This song just makes me want to projectile vomit every time I hear it. How can you NOT hate this song? (You might have to watch on youtube because blogger is being a beeyatch and is not letting me embed it)

3. I mean, it's a nice sentiment and everything, but it is THIS fluffy feel-good nonsense that is consistently (if not self-righteously) crammed down our throats this time of year...and where does it get us? Nowhere. There's still war. There's still famine. The republicans still hate the democrats. Who gives a shit? Give it a rest already! Don't pretend to care about the homeless just because it's Christmas, OK? Be an asshole all year round. At least that way you'll be honest.

4. I'm in the minority here, I guess, because I actually LIKE this song. Look at George Michael's hair! That alone should make this video entertaining to watch. (Grrr, youtube is becoming so lame by not letting me embed some videos!)

5. I saved this one for last. Probably the worst Christmas song ever recorded in history. Might it be because I hate Britney Spears and the fact she has no singing talent? Or maybe it's because Christmas is supposed to be about "pretending to give a shit"and Britney Spears is the exact opposite of that. Ugh. I'm getting a headache trying to wrestle with posting up these videos. Over and out, minions.

Do you keep a journal?

I've often heard people say that keeping a journal or diary can help you become a better writer. I just love writing in a journal--I own several of them. I have one journal just for poetry and another for jotting down quick notes and sloppily-drawn character sketches/doodles. But my most important one is my personal journal (or diary).

I've kept a personal journal with me since I was eight years old. Over the years, I've filled at least a dozen of them. I enjoy writing in my journal. It is relaxing and it has become something of a ritual. I don't write in it every day...but at least once a month. So long as I'm writing, I'm keeping my mind sharp and my ideas clear.

A writer should write as often as they can. Practice makes perfect. So if you haven't tried journaling yet, I would recommend you start.

You never know...it might help. *Shrug*

Anime I'm watching...

I'm an otaku. Not gonna lie, y'all. But I'm pretty sure you guys have already figured that out by now.

I'm currently watching My Otome (you can watch it every Wednesday on Mnet during the Bandai Block) and Kampfer (you can watch the whole thing on animeseason.com or other online sites).

Kampfer is just stupid-silly. Ecchi...gender-bending...typical harem conventions...yeah. Craziness. I think Natsuru is like the dumbest heterosexual male on the planet. How can a seventeen year old boy be so STUPID?! In one scene, the girl literally french kisses him on the floor and he's STILL clueless as to how she feels about him. Dumb!

My Otome is much more enjoyable but it has just as much fluffy-nonsence as Kampfer. I'm digging all the yuri scenes in this series, though. It has more plot...but yeah...I would be kidding if I told you I was watching it for the "well-written story arc." Scantily-clad girls with guns and mecha robots. Bring it. ;-)

Another one bites the dust

Damn. I've lost another small press publisher this year. It's been happening more and more recently. If you're in the indie/small press circuit, I'm sure you've personally seen at least one small press business close its doors in the last six months. And as a writer, I must admit, this trend kinda scares me.

I love small press publishing. They take more risks than bigger companies and are more willing to give unknown writers a chance. As a writer in a small press company, you get to know the editors and other writers on a personal level--the work environment feels like a family setting. But nowadays writing for small press publishers can be a real gamble! At any moment your publisher can shut its doors, leaving you and your fellow writers dangling in the wind. I can't even imagine investing two or three novels into a company and in a single instant, lose it all. Poof. Just like that.

You see, when a publisher closes its doors, it's sort of like being laid-off. The writer may or may not get the cover art rights to their book, and although they get full rights to all of their written work, finding another publisher who'll reprint it is rough. Self-publishing is an attractive option--but for many writers, publishing their own stuff can seem daunting, if not impossible.

I admire self-published writers. I really do. They work really hard but so many of them often fail. Just yesterday, a writer friend of mine at my local coffee shop (and unofficial "office" haha) told me a horror story about a fellow patron/writer who self-published and spent thousands of dollars on his latest novel. He had his book on display near the cash register--no one was buying it. And according to all the whispers, the guy was in serious debt because of it. It just made me realize not everyone is going to make it--and that goes for self-published or not!

The truth is, the publishing industry is changing. And as a writer, you have to adapt.

Think smart. Weigh your options. If you're going to do small-press, make sure you gamble wisely. If you're going to do self-publishing, make sure you research and really know what you're doing before you jump into it. Don't be that moron who wastes thousands of dollars investing in a book only to end up with a mountain of debt. Writing is not for the faint of heart. In fact, I would advise everyone to stay away from the "profession" entirely!

How long can YOU go without sex? Anyone experiencing dry spells at the moment?

I'm not embarrassed to talk about this topic but maybe that's because I have such a robust sex life. Cannibals can really get around. I can't even begin to count the number of sex slaves I have stored in my meat locker, hahaha! Oh snap. I just realized I should probably go back there and check on them since it has been like, a month, since I last let them out.

But I digress. I can go 2 weeks without sex. Tops. Anything longer than 2 weeks and I start kidnapping unwilling parters and storing them in my freezer for later use.

By the way, I don't recommend storing people in your meat locker for long periods of time. I've done that before and the results were...uncomfortably shocking. Experienced a lot of freezer burn that day. Lots and lots of freezer burn. *sigh*

Time sure does fly when you're having fun. Now that winter is fast-approaching, what sort of frosty activities do you have planned for the season?

I always enjoy drinking hot cider this time of year. I like wearing sweaters and long coats too. Maybe it's the latent New Englander in me, but I'm actually looking forward to some snow this year.

On a side note, I am so sad I have to wait until February to see more of my beloved Walking Dead! What shall I do without Glenn or Shane to comfort me during the weekends? Now that I have a serious fangirl crush on the actor Steven Yeun, I will be miserable!

Game of Thrones should also be starting in February too...so at least I have something to look forward to. Don't know what I'll do during the meantime.

I cannot count how many times I've been asked: "What do vegetarians EAT for Thanksgiving?!" Usually followed by an aghast or incredulous expression or sometimes a sympathetic shake of the head or a pitying sigh. "Oh your poor, poor thing...vegetarians must starve during the holiday season!"

Wrong. Vegetarians and vegans alike can and do enjoy the holiday festivities just as much as our omnivore companions. I love love love Thanksgiving! It is one of my favorite holidays because I can pig out on all the tofurky I can shovel into my mouth and not have to worry about fighting over the last few mouthfuls like my meat-eating relatives do when their turkey is nearly gobbled up!

So what is tofurky? I'm sure many omnivores have pondered on this mystical-sounding food product. Some of the images I've heard described to me are downright hysterical. "Is it a turkey-shaped blob of raw tofu? Does it cook in the oven or is it eaten cold?"

Hahaha...silly omnivores. This is what tofurky looks like:

Nothing fancy or all that elaborate. It is made out of seitan and filled with a wild rice and mushroom stuffing. You cook it in the oven over a bed of onions, potatoes, carrots, and celery and serve it hot with cranberry sauce or vegan gravy. This Thanksgiving, I will be eating green bean casserole, buttery mashed potatoes, vegan stuffing, tofurky, cranberry sauce and "giblet" gravy. I will be sucking all of this all down with a fine Ruffino chianti wine (riserva ducale 2007) and a slice (or two) of pumpkin pie for dessert! Yummy! I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving feast!

Elder Scrolls V: SKYRIM

It's not often I blog about video game reviews, but I wanted to share my thoughts about Skyrim with you today. Let me be blunt with you first: I am not (and nor will I ever claim to be) a gamer. In fact, I've never played Skyrim before. But because I only have one television, I've been forced to watch at least 5 hours of gameplay a day for the past two weeks now.

My boyfriend eats, breathes, and sleeps Skyrim. Every spare moment he has is spent on the PS3. Since he hogs the television, I've spent the past few days ordering his Dunmer character around from the couch: "Do the Thieves Guild Quest! Stop wasting time with the Greybeards! Kill the dragon, already!" and such, haha. Skyrim has taken over our lives and I'm a little ashamed to confess I've become somewhat obsessed with this game as well.

Inspiration is a funny thing, indeed. Before the Skyrim Invasion, I was suffering from a serious case of writer's block. However, after seeing so many Elves and Dragons dance across my screen, I've decided to try my hand at a fantasy story to pass the time until I can get back on track with my novel.

I really love Skyrim's storyline. The writing is top notch and I enjoy the dialogue sequences from all of the characters. I've never written a dragon story before. I always thought dragons were corny as hell and an overused crutch for many in "epic fantasy" genre. Skyrim has a unique spin on the dragon cliche. I was inspired the most by the "Shouts" and the whole concept of speech and language being used as weapons.

I have no idea how long this little dragon story of mine will be. Haven't actually sat down to write it yet. I'm hoping for a quick little novella. Maybe 10 to 30 thousand words. We'll see...

Defining "Sexual Tension"

Ah, sexual tension. What is a decent romantic subplot without it? Initial physical attraction...denial...resistance...and sometimes (but more often than not, a lack of) sweet surrender! All wonderful things to flesh out a romantic relationship in a story.

I just love watching sexual tension develop between characters--I don't care if it is in a movie, TV series, or novel...hell, even in real life! I just like seeing it! There is definitely an "art" to creating this type of tension. An unskilled writer can make it look cliched and contrived, however when sexual tension is done right--wow! I don't think there is anything more explosively entertaining to draw an audience into a story! When folks are screaming: "GET IT OVER WITH AND BANG THE BITCH ALREADY!" you know you're doing the right thing! Haha!

They key to creating sexual tension is to first understand what sexual tension is. Are there different types? What sort of scenarios create this tension? I'll write more posts about this topic in the future, but for now let's cover the basics.

As human beings, we naturally try to alleviate the things that frustrate us. However when we're dealing with sexual tension, the situation or circumstance often prevents us relieving the discomforting feelings. This frustration is what essentially drives the sexual tension forward. This is why sexual tension is inherently more "sexual" than traditional overt sexual displays. Denial and restraint require more mental and physical energy than surrendering to an indulgence. The longer we stay trapped in this unpleasant and frustrated state, the stronger the conflict and tension.

Just like in real life, sexual tension occurs for a variety of reasons. Perhaps two married co-workers develop an interest in each other at the office, or a high school student harbors a crush on their much older teacher. So long as the EMOTION behind the reason is palpable enough to draw in an audience, you can create sexual frustration between characters. Conflict is always entertaining to watch--and readers loved being teased.

One way to create sexual tension is to make one character push forward (or initiate a sexual response) while the other character steps back. Using the scenario from above, let's pretend the seventeen-year-old schoolboy accidentally bumps into his teacher in the hallway when they are alone. The unexpected physical contact makes him blush, and instead of immediately moving away, he lets his hand linger on her shoulder. In this scenario, the student is the one who is pushing forward with the initial contact and so the teacher must inevitably pull back. Let's say she does not want to act inappropriately with this young boy or maybe she does not want to lose her job. So she smiles politely at him, steps away from his touch, and quickly excuses herself to the teacher's lounge.

You can also create sexual tension by making both characters step back or refrain from initiating the sexual response, but this will only work if an external force propels them forward again. Maybe our schoolboy is painfully shy around the women he is attracted to. He knows he could never get away with doing something so bold as the first example, so he keeps to himself and just makes goo-goo eyes at his teacher during class. The teacher is still concerned with upholding professional boundaries and so she does not say or do anything to encourage his behavior. However, now let's imagine the teacher is experiencing financial difficulties due to budget cuts and mass lay-offs at work. Unable to afford her mortgage, she moves across the city into a small apartment--the same apartment our little schoolboy lives. Now that these two are neighbors they are forced to see each other every day in a more "intimate" setting and the sexual tension can move forward again. The external force pushing them together is proximity. They can start carpooling together or maybe the teacher offers to help him with his homework after class. The possibilities are endless.

The thing to remember is that the distance between your two characters must always remain far enough to create frustration while maintaining room for interpersonal interaction. The longer you let this "push-pull" effect control your characters, the better and richer the sexual tension. However, if you let it go for too long, people will lose interest. Finding the right balance is key.

Transphobia in the gay community

This woman has such a beautiful spirit. I really loved this interview and I wanted to share it with you guys today. It is always so refreshing to see people of color speak up about LGBTQIA issues. I feel that in the LGBTQIA community, transexuals and transgenders are often completely left out of the discussion. We need to reach out to ALL of our brothers and sisters, especially to the young people in our community who are trans or intersex. I know that as a bisexual, my needs are often ignored or ridiculed--but no population faces more persecution than trans people! Gays and straights alike share this erroneous view that transexuals are somehow "lower" on the Social Darwinistic Scale than others. Ugh! It makes me so angry to see this sort of disgusting behavior. But I am most angry when I see it from those in the gay community!

I think a lot of what Tracee had to say is true in this video. There is a hierarchy in the gay community and it sort of goes like this:
1. Gay (white) men
2. Lesbian (white) women
3. And all the rest

If you're lumped in the "All the rest" category, you'll know. Just look at the lack of representation in gay rights groups/media. And even if you are accepted into a group, your presence there is merely "tolerated" and you're expected to shut up and let the "top tier folks" handle everything. I've faced a lot of "holier-than-thou" attitudes from many gays and lesbians for speaking out against them in regards to racism, sexism, religious intolerance, transphobia, and bisexual erasure that exists in our community. We are in no way a "united"movement. And to pretend otherwise is just stupid.

There is prejudice on all sides and I feel this needs to stop. If we hope to achieve full civil rights we can't keep marginalizing people.

Have you guys been watching this series on the AMC channel? Season 1 is up on Netflix and new episodes of the second season are on Sundays! I love The Walking Dead so much! Finally, a well-written, well-acted zombie story with a character-driven plot! If you like zombies you will LOVE this series!

Not to mention...Jon Bernthal. Oh yes. He's my Smexxxy Friday today. He plays the character "Shane" and is Rick's best friend. In this scene, he is fucking his best friend's wife! Surprise surprise! (Spoiler alert) I think many people will think Shane is an asshole--but I sort of like him. He's a very honest character and I feel he is trying to do the right thing. Also, he's very hawt. And so very masculine and alpha-male. *cheesy fangirl smile*

The best part about Halloween...

...is the leftover pumpkin seeds from the jack-o-lantern! Yum! Yum! Take a look at my beautiful culinary creations! Roasted pumpkin seeds are extremely easy to prepare--so easy, in fact, a complete buffoon like ME was able to make them!

I used these ingredients for spices. Chopped garlic, hot sauce, salt, pepper, greek cavender seasoning, chili powder, butter, red chili pepper flakes and cajun seasoning. As you can see, I like my seeds SPICY! You can just use salt and pepper for seasoning if you want--just don't rinse the pumpkin guts off the seeds!

Line your baking sheet with wax paper. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Melt your butter with the chopped garlic and or additional seasonings in the microwave and then pour over the seeds on the baking sheet. Roast the raw seeds and butter mixture for 45 minutes, stirring every 15min or so. Done.

Pumpkin seeds are very nutritious! They make for an excellent seasonal snack. :)

Cannibalistic Confessions

It is hard to be cannibal in this world. We are so misunderstood and people are so quick to judge us. The media paints us all as these bloodthirsty monsters and serial killers! But it's not true! Not all cannibals are bad people. In fact, most of the ones I've spoken to have been quiet, soft-spoken individuals with a curious affinity for taxidermy and fine red wines.

Cannibals can be reasonable. We can have intelligent, thoughtful discussions about current events. We pay our taxes and we try to get by the best way we can. We're not all crazy. Hungry, maybe, but not criminally insane-. At the end of the day we are still human beings.

I will not stand for these atrocious injustices against cannibals any longer! We are a proud people with a long and rich history, and we deserve respect. I write this post to rally all the cannibals across the world to pick up their pens and write to their legal representatives about this matter! Do not persecute us for craving human flesh!

Since I write "VC" on just about everything I am just christening myself with that name to spare everyone and myself from further confusion.

Starting (ha!) six months or so ago, I've been going exclusively by Vicy Cross. So...yeah. It's Vicy Cross now. Pronounced VEE-CEE (like TV) Not Vicky.

Lately, I've been listening to this song while I write. Maybe that might have something to do with my "color schemes." I just love the color gray and I think the song's haunting lyrics really capture the color's "essence." I also just noticed all of the text on my blog is gray as well!

Somber, moody, and complex...it just kind of lingers in your ears while you listen to it. I love Banco De Gaio anyway, but I listen to this song whenever I am writing a particularly emotional scene. Hope you enjoyed it! :)

If Your Story Was A Color

Colors can often paint a mood. And I know many writers use colors to describe a scene. It may be somewhat cliched, but I think colors are important when creating a visual landscape for the reader.

I've been thinking about my WIP lately and the overall "mood" or "atmosphere" I am trying to create. I noticed as I was editing how much gray and white I used. The sky is always overcast and it is often snowing during pivotal scenes.

If my story was a color, it would be a dull, somber grayish color. Gray reflects my main character's intelligence, loneliness, and endurance. But white also represents my character's childish naivety and well-meaning intentions. The moon plays an important role in my story too.

And yet another brooding, cerebral Smexxxy Friday posting! However, I find this short-film fascinating. I can't quite figure this girl out. Is she messing with him for kicks or can she not make up her mind?

I like the sexual frustration in this clip. The boyfriend obviously wants to possess her, but when she does not give him the answer he wants, he acts out aggressively and then throws a temper tantrum like a toddler. His lack of maturity is understandable--I mean, he asks the girl at least three times and she still says no!

Still, I like her. She does not compromise herself just so she can please this man. So many women default to men in situations like this. They choose to "settle" rather than go for what they really want. For a woman like her to accept a marriage proposal, her suitor will have to be just as strong as she is!

The "maybe" at the end of the film, makes me think they might end up together. I like the ambiguity, though. I hope you enjoyed it!

Every writer needs a cheerleader!

It is easy to get discouraged as a writer. Not always are you going to look back at your work and say: "I wrote this! This is brilliant!"More often than not, you're going to look back and say: "Wow. This really sucks." And the sad truth is that you're probably right!

There is always room for improvement. Always. Even with the best editor, there will always be that one thing you could've fixed or tweaked. There's no such thing as a "perfect story." All of the "original" ideas you think you have have already been done before. And only a complete idiot would believe their point of view is so uniquely different from all of their competitors. Everything is borrowed. Nothing is new.

This realization can make many writers depressed or even disgusted with their own work. After all, how important is your story at the end of the day? Is it going to save lives? Change the world of literature? Become a blockbuster at the theaters and make you a million dollars? More than likely, no. So what's the point?

Here is when a cheerleader must step in and tell you to keep writing anyway! Every writer needs a cheerleader. Every writer needs something or someone to keep them motivated. Without it, a writer can get moody, depressed, and discouraged.

So I ask you today who is your cheerleader? What keeps YOU going?

Jesus Christ, just LOOK at him! I am an atheist but when I see Lee Byung Hun I shout for GAWD, ladies! Hahaha! I have been in love with this man since I was fourteen years old. If I ever saw him in person, omigoodness...he would have to call security or something because I already know I won't be able to behave, hahahaha! The things I would do to this man...hell fucking yes. He is almost twice my age (he is 41) but I do not care! I would wreck his whole world, hahaha!

Let us bask in the godliness that is Lee Byung Hun. Oh yes. I'm enjoying my Friday already!

American Horror Story (FX series)

"We got bats." Hahahaha! Best comeback line ever. Anyway, I watched this show for the first time last week when it premiered on FX. After watching the first two episodes, here's what I think:

Overall scariness? Next to zilch. Creepy? Yes. Scary? No. In fact, I was laughing through most of the episode because the characters were so...outrageous. Maybe it is because I am a cannibal or something, I don't know. The fact is, I don't scare easily. And the show really really tried to be scary...which just made it even more funny.

Overal sexiness? Actually...American Horror Story is pretty sexy. In a weird and creepy way...I kinda dig the sadomasochistic dude in the latex suit, haha!

Writing for teens and young adults...

I am 22yrs old and even I am at a loss on how to approach this subject! The YA genre is booming right now and like many writers out there, I want to jump on this train while it is still rolling! Twilight, Harry Potter, Eragon and Hunger Games are all extremely successful YA novels. So how can you break into the YA niche and what does it take to become a successful YA novelist?

I wish I could tell you.

You see, as a teenager, I never read books in the YA section. Not once. Whenever I went into a bookstore and wandered into that section, I almost always saw a majority of 11-14yr olds perusing the shelves. No self-respecting 16yr old is going to shop where the "kids" go to read their books! Although YA is supposed to target 13-18yr olds, tweens are usually the dominant consumers. High school students want something more sophisticated to read and college students, pffft! If they have time to read at all, they're not going to go into the "kiddy" or "young adult" section of the store! So there's my dilemma! I feel I am "too old" to go into the YA section of the store but I wish there were books that targeted my specific age group. I'm so tired of the "16yr old protagonist." I want to read about 21yr olds.

I am currently writing a YA novel...but I want my target demographic to cover 17-22yr olds. I want to write about violence and sex without traumatizing my audience.

I used to think all YA novels were Christian-themed girl scout stories about HOW YOUR BODY IS CHANGING and such, haha! Reading Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins completely changed how I view YA. In fact, Hunger Games is what inspired me to write YA in the first place! I've heard about "Edgy YA" but I don't know how well they sell...

I don't know. I'm still mulling it over. I want to get in on the YA craze but I don't want to market myself to bubblegum teeny boppers.

Anyone else like K-Pop?

I don't know if I put up this video before...but yeah, if so, here it is again. I have this new station on my TV now called MNet. It's pretty cool. I get to watch anime, K-dramas (I'm currently watching Yaksa right now), and listen to lots and lots of KPop music.

I grew up listening to Kpop, though. Man...I still dance to some of the old school 90s stuff I listened to when I was in middle school and high school, hahaha! I love Kpop! My favorite Kpop band was and always will be Koyote.

How can I express my love for Koyote? I mean, seriously...this band changed my life, haha! I was 12yrs old when I first heard this song, I think. Everyone else was dancing to Slim Shady and Jimmy Eat World. I was rocking out to Koyote, H.O.T, Baby VOX, S.E.S, and all that other 90s stuff, haha!

Having a Korean step-mom really opened me up to a whole lot of Korean culture. I was already into Japanese animation and Japanese horror before I met her. *Shakes head* Speaking of which, I think I'll make kimchi fried rice for dinner tonight. That kimchi has been in my fridge for...a very long time now, lol!

Useless Writing Tips

One of the hardest things you need to learn about starting a novel is learning when to use the advice you read on blogs/articles/books/etc. and when to trust your own judgments. Every other week, I'm reading some new blog post about how to introduce your main character or how long your chapter lengths should be. Yadda yadda yadda.

If you research that crap too long, you'll NEVER get around to writing your novel! And besides, aren't all of those articles basically preaching the same thing over and over again? First three chapters are the most important. No info-dumping. "Said" is always the right dialogue tag. No head-popping. Start your novel where the action is. Research your market and pick an agent accordingly. Write your synopsis before you write your novel. Always have a beta-reader or crit-partner. Never submit a manuscript without reading the publisher's guidelines. Expect rejections. Use social media to market yourself. The acceptance rate for most publishers is less than 5%. Debut novelists should expect to follow different rules than established writers. Blah blah blah

Imagine trying to start a novel with all of THAT constantly going through your mind--ugh! You'll never get anywhere! So forget all the useless writing tips. You don't need them now until after you're done. Until then, just go with it.

I swear, some bloggers get off on spewing this sort of crap on a daily basis. While it may help out the newbs, it puts an enormous amount of pressure on veterans who should already know this stuff but then start second-guessing themselves as they shop around for tips.

So here is my useless writing tip for the day:

Understand and accept that there is no golden rule to getting your book published. Luck and persistence is what gets you published 90% of the time. There will always be that writer who did not market themselves as well or who did not work as hard as you but STILL managed to get published. Shitty novels are published everyday. Remember, it is not a matter of how well you can write. It's about how many books you can sell. That's how this business works.

Work hard, but don't kill yourself. Yes, writing a novel is tedious but if it was easy, every asshole out there with a horrible idea would be making millions of dollars.

Holy hell, it's been a long time!

Um...yeah, I already know what you're thinking. I took the mother of all hiatuses, I know. But now I'm back!

I have a good reason for going away for so long. I finally finished college, huzzah! I am no longer a student...for now.

Secondly, I am in the process of writing a novel! Ta-dah! Guess what? I'm almost finished with it too. I'm 55K words into it at the moment but I am guessing the final length will be somewhere around 85-92K. Writing a novel is EXHAUSTING! I've barely gotten any sleep at all! It's terrible! I have dark circles under my eyes and I've lost maybe ten pounds just from sitting at my computer for 24/7 cranking out this frickin' novel!

I'm not going to give any details away just yet. Patience, young grasshopper. I'll give you the full scoop in a later post. For now, just bask in my presence for I have finally returned to you!

She expected a shove or a push in return, but to her complete amazement, the stranger looped an arm around her waist and prevented her fall.

With a cry, she melted into his embrace, thankful just to receive a comforting touch. Her nails bit into his shoulders. Tears seeped into his collar and wet his neck as she struggled for composure against him.

“I’m…so sorry…!” She squeezed her eyes shut in an effort to dam the torrent of tears, but droplets leaked through the corners of her eyes and trickled into her mouth.

The sound of his voice snapped her back into the present, and with an anguished, tear-stained face, she raised her head and looked up into his pale blue eyes.

“I’m not crazy,” she whispered, more for her benefit than for his, but the man’s expression remained dubious and unconvinced. “I’ve just had a terrible day..."

Does the weather affect the way you write?

At least for me, I enjoy rainy stormy weather. It pumps me up and makes me excited. I'm the idiot who goes outside during a tornado to watch and marvel at the sky (there was a phase when I wanted to grow up and be a meteorologist/tornado chaser). Mother Nature's fury inspires me to pick up a pen. How about you? Do you prefer calm, tranquil days with sunshine and cool breezes or dreary rainclouds with sleet and hail?

I just realized that weather plays a big role in most of my stories. I guess I'm a bit cliched to think that when "It was a rainy and stormy night..." it makes for a more interesting story, hahaha!

If not for her impending suicide, Holly might’ve enjoyed the picturesque view. Instead, she stared down into the river with tears in her eyes. The tip of her nose felt numb and her hands shook with cold.

From Holly’s perch, the dark river appeared saturated with black ink. The surface of the water sparkled as if a million diamonds simmered beneath the waves. After she had jumped, the water would swallow her up into that darkness, and her problems would sink with her lifeless body down to the bottom of the river, never to be seen again.

Yeah, she's dead. But isn't she a tasty looking morsel? I'm pickling her in my bathtub so I can eat the rest for later. *sigh* Wannabe goth girls are a guilty pleasure of mine, I must confess. And they taste especially sour...

It's been over 400 days. I tried to be good. Honest. But...my craving for human flesh is stronger than me. How could I have been so stupid to think that broccoli and tofu could ever satisfy my desires? Why did I decide to abstain from cannibalism anyway?!

I mean, it's so fucking pointless! So stupid and utterly futile! I'm a natural born killer. It's what I do. To think that I could be anything different (much less an HERBIVORE for christ's sake!) is foolish nonsense. So yeah. I fell off the wagon. I feel guilty about this, but what's done is done. *sigh* And so I begin my sobriety anew...

To cheer myself up, I went and got myself a nose hoop ring from Etsy. Rock Your Nose carries cool stuff. And it's all handmade too. Right now, all 10% of sales go toward helping Japan. Check it out.

Speaking of awesome body jewelry, I have fallen completely in love with the nose rings at Maria Tash. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! But so fucking expensive... Maybe I'll treat myself after another 400 days!

4/11: Media of the Month!!!!

Casshern Sins is a gorgeous anime I just finished watching. I have the Funimation Network on my TV...but I didn't want to wait week after week for new episodes, so I watched the first 12 episodes on Netflix and the last 12 online.

Casshern Sins is one of those rare animes that takes your breath away with its beauty. I loved the artwork. Very old school. Muted colors except for intense bursts in random places...like the "C" on Casshern's chest. I loved the way the characters' eyes look--so gorgeous! Casshern is so beautifully drawn, I honestly wanted to reach through my screen and touch him.

Like many post-appocalytpic animes, Casshern Sins is very moody and dark...cerebral...ambiguous... The characters are saturated with angst--the plot is hard to follow and is somewhat repetitive. Basically, the story is about a planet of robots (humans are nearly extinct) who are trying to find meaning in their lives now that they are decaying and rusting to death. With the exception of Casshern, an identical nemesis named Dio and his sadistic girlfriend, Leda, none of the other robots can reproduce sexually. Casshern is on a journey to reclaim his lost memories and put an end to the Ruin he caused.

My favorite character is Sophita. She's only seen in one episode (episode four) but I loved every moment her. Although Casshern is romantically involved (if you can call it that) with another character, Lyuze, there is obvious chemistry with Sophita, The Angel of Ruin. He does not kill her even though she impales him with a spear and insists on fighting him to the death.

Sophita does not know how to express herself unless she is fighting. She is a very passionate character, but is incapable of voicing her feelings. After following Casshern around for most of the episode, she falls in love with him and fights him so she can "show" him how deeply she cares for him. Casshern allows her to stab him without fighting back.

This is a pivotal moment in the series, as it is the first time Casshern doesn't black out during a fight and destroys everything around him. When Sophita pulls away, she realizes she does not want to hurt Casshern and so departs, vowing to return someday (although in the anime, she never does.) It is my favorite scene in the anime because it is so sad...so beautiful, and for whatever reason I strongly relate to both Sophita and Casshern. Also...she might not be talking about "fighting" at all...but about sex and relationships. She wants more but she is only a robot (and unlike Casshern, she wasn't made to love and be sexual).

Here is the scene. Unfortunately I could only find the subbed version. If you are going to watch Casshern Sins, the dubbed English version is phenomenal (with the exception of Ringo's voice).

All in all, the animation is beautiful, the characters are intriguing, but the incomprehensible storyline and rushed ending ruins it! I don't know if I'll watch it a second time...but I did enjoy it while it lasted. 6/10.

The sun beat over their heads without mercy. Not a single cloud graced the sky on the day of her mother’s funeral, and as the ceremony progressed, Holly’s father moaned louder into his handkerchief. Violent sobs quaked through his body. He gasped with each strained breath as he wiped the fluids that trickled from his nose, eyes, and mouth.

Seeing her father that way had frightened her. She wondered when she too would break down and dissolve into tears, but the tears never came that day.

My (lack of) green thumb

It's spring, it's green, flowers are popping up everywhere and I'm giddy from Texas sunshine. Yesterday I got it into my head that I should start a garden. Little mind the fact I have an apartment with no backyard to speak of... Or that I massacre vegetation with the same zeal I butcher babies...

In the third grade I had to do this photosynthesis project by growing my own plant and then studying the cells under a microscope to show to the class. By the end of the seven or eight weeks, everyone in my class produced long, beautiful green shoots... I was the only child standing there with an empty cup of dirt.

"Your lima bean didn't grow, TK. It's dead." I failed that assignment. Damn.

But I'm determined to redeem myself this time. Here's what I got: (left to right) Mint, Dill, and Arugula.

I'm most excited about the mint and arugula. I never tasted arugula before--it's a delicious spicy little leaf. I like it a lot. The dill is for my guinea pigs.

Getting into the spirit of things, my boyfriend and I also purchased a wind chime. Big mistake. It was nice at first but the damn thing was too loud! Around 2am my boyfriend took it down so we could sleep! What do you think...pleasant or annoying? I don't have a camera so I was using my laptop webcam...excuse the poor quality!

For some reason...it feels like it has been FOREVER since I've done a Smexxxy Friday. Out of all of my posts, I love doing the Smexxxy Friday ones best. Is is silly to say I look forward to it every week? Haha?

Anyway...Quills. The movie. It stars Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, and Geoffery Rush. A fictional account of the very real Marquis de Sade's life. Quills was nominated for an oscar, if you can believe that. Every erotic author should watch this movie. It speaks of a time when freedom of speech was not tolerated. Back in the day, if I tried to publish what I write now, I could've been hanged! As an erotic author, I was inspired.

This is one of the more twisted and fucked up movies I've seen. (Remember Eyes Wide Shut?) I was shouting at my TV: "What is HAPPENING?!" because my mind was melting between my ears every five seconds. Is it a horror? A comedy? An erotic film? Somewhere between all three? I don't know.

The eroticism kept getting freakier and more twisted! I mean...I was almost beside myself when Joaquin Phoenix's character fucked a DEAD girl! I was like: NOOOOO! Necrophilia?! This is too far... even for me! Gross...but...wait...what's he doing? Hey, that's kinda hot. OMFG, am I really enjoying a sex scene with a CORPSE?!

Haha! You can watch this movie on Netflix, I think. Give it a try. I think you'll be surprised by how hilarious, absurd, and downright gorey this movie is. Not a bad way to spend a Friday night.

Cannibalistic Confessions

I remember when "The Lovely Bones" was so popular and when everyone and their grandmother RAVED about the book. I don't follow trends or fads. So when someone says "X is great" I tend to do Y just to spite them. People who follow fads are stupid and most of them wouldn't know how to spot a good book even if it leapt off the shelf and flung itself between their eyes. Or, of course, if Oprah told them so.

But "The Lovely Bones" was on HBO or something, so I sat down and watched it. Halfway through the movie, I wanted to punch myself for decision. I'm not kidding...with five minutes of movie left to go I was done. There was no way I could sit through it anymore. My boyfriend begged me to keep watching just we could see the ending, but I had stomached as much of it as I could. In the end, he snatched the remote from me and forced me to watch the last five minutes.

So...here's the movie in a nutshell.

Creepy pedo-neighbor dude rapes and murders girl. Girl goes to heaven and stalks this boy and her lesbian friend back on earth. Her family tries to solve the case but in the end, never do. Girl possesses the body of her lesbian friend and makes out with the boy. She goes to heaven. The end.

However in the book...she basically RAPES her lesbian friend. She takes over her body without permission so she can have sex with this boy. Um...OK? Unprotected teenage sex = entrance into heaven? WTF?! What was the POINT of this dumbass story? She didn't help anyone solve her own murder OR save other children from being raped and killed! All she wanted to do was make goo-goo eyes at this boy.

Peter Jackson directed this movie...so maybe that should've been my first clue. The special effects were really pretty...but there was no substance. I kept waiting for it it to get good...but Nothing Ever Happened.

And THIS is why I don't follow fads. The only thing I loved about this movie was this song.

Respecting your characters

I don't give a shit about most of my characters. I torture and eat their babies. I give them horrible ironic deaths. I put them in impossible situations just to push their moral boundaries. I do this because their pain amuses me. They are my play-things and I have no respect for them.

Which is becoming a problem...

I'm writing a novel now...and dammit...I actually have to give a crap about my main character. As a short story writer, I didn't have to invest much time and energy into my characters' personalities and backstories. None of that mattered to me. They weren't really "people." Just dolls to play with when I was bored. And as you know, my attention span is that of a gnat's.

But a novel is completely different. You have to know your characters. Like really, KNOW them. Care for them, even. I have to think of my characters as friends or at least as "people." I have to throw myself entirely into their world and leave my own life behind. It's an engrossing process that takes time and diligence.

Can I close my eyes and visualize this person? How should they talk? What motivates them? Is this character behaving authentically? And would I talk to this person in real life?

When I'm bored, I can't just kill them off or randomly set their families on fire. That's immature and far too easy. They are alive in their stories, waiting for me to direct them to their climax and resolution.

So in a way, I am their goddess...and as such, it is my responsibility to carry it through to the end. *sigh*

Spring Fucking Break! Woohoo!

Hell fucking yeah, y'all! It's about damn time! GAWD! I'm so burned out from school, I don't even know what to tell you. It's been a struggle. I don't know if it's because I'm a senior and this is my last semester or what...but OH MY GOD I'm so happy it's spring break!

I'm 22yrs old and I'm going to PARTY this year. Gonna get wasted in Mexico. Like, stupid drunk. I don't care, lol! I'm not staying home...sooooooooo that means I'll be away from this blog for a little bit.

If you don't hear back from me...go ahead and assume the drug cartels have taken me hostage and sold me into slave trafficking. *grins* Don't look so worried...they only kidnap blondes so I should be fine. Right?

Smexxxy Friday (Cowgirls?)

What is it about cowgirls people find so irresistible? Is it her "free spirit?" Her short frilly skirt? Her ability to wield a gun and ride a horse? What IS it?

In Texas, I see a lot of cowgirls. Like...literally, they're everywhere. And I have to admit, when I first moved here, I couldn't help but laugh at them. Huge oversized hats, obnoxious leather boots and skimpy outfits seemed a little much for a fashion statement...not to mention the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders who are plastered just about everywhere where I live. Hard to take these gals seriously. But I guess that's the point.

The modern "cowgirl" doesn't know the first thing about frontier life--she'd rather hang out at Starbucks and text her friends than jump on a saddle and round up cattle. The "cowgirl" has become something of an "aesthetic," and as much as I tried to abstain from absorbing Texas culture, I'm ashamed to admit I've finally cracked.

Yes. I eat fried pickles (and fucking LOVE them). I can order a meal in Spanish (Una cerveza pour favor!) I adore Tex-Mex (Mmmm...can we say chile relleno?) I no longer mind seeing longhorns strapped on the hood of pickup trucks. And I bought my first pair of cowgirl boots last weekend.

After three years, I couldn't resist, dammit! I wanted to be a cowgirl too! So I present to you a violation of my 8yr boycott on leather products.

Does this make me a hypocritical vegetarian? Yes. Most probably. But being a cannibal kinda puts me in the hypocritical category too, I guess. The boots were really cute. Soooooo...I made an exception, haha! Have a good weekend, guys!

I especially like Michelle Tan's, "Belonging To My Body," Cyd Charisse Fulton's, "Good News," Liberation Breed's, "Tuesday's Apocalypse," and Sunil Narayan's, "A Swan Who Wallows In Lotus Laden Ponds." It makes me so proud to be part of a talented and multiculturally diverse bunch of writers. Unlike my fellow colleagues at my other publishers, the writers at aaduna look and write like me. My issues are THEIR issues. I GET them and they get me.

It's such a good feeling!

2/11: Media of the Month

It has been...months since I've done a "media of the month." I'm so consistent, don't you think?

Anyways...I wanted to do something relating to Black History Month before February ran out. Now, I don't know if you guys are aware of this...but I went to several Catholic schools in my high school days. Before you jump to any conclusions, I am a devout atheist (and always will be) but my experiences with Catholics and the Catholic religion left a lasting impression on me. Some good. Some bad. But no regrets. I think it made me a more well-rounded person while reaffirming my secular position.

However I don't want to wax philosophic about religion...there are plenty of blogs about that. But I DO want to talk about my love of Catholic arts. I adore the aesthetic of stained glass windows and religious icons. I love the architecture of gothic Catholic churches and just the overall "look." Whenever I go into a Catholic church, I am always filled with peace--they are always so beautiful. One thing I admire about Catholics is that they take pride in their churches and try to make their holy places beautiful.

Just lovely, don't you think? Such intricate design and craftsmanship... I would love to have every window in my house look just like that! And I'm an atheist! (and a cannibal...so I'm probably going to hell for blasphemy or sacrilege...or...I dunno, lol!)

I especially love medals. My favorite saint is Martin de Porres--the first "black" person in the Americas to be canonized. Now I realize he's probably only there for tokenism. I mean, he was born in the 1500s, beautified in the 1800s, but was canonized in 1962 for fuck's sake...! (Hmm...right around the time the Civil Rights Movement was in full swing...perhaps the Vatican had an "epiphany" or a savvy PR agent) But I always liked the idea of a black saint. And like me, he is a vegetarian! I looked high and low for a medal, and finally found one a few weeks ago online. I'm very proud of my medal. It's a rare find. The first photo shows the back side. It says: "Pray for us."

This next photo is the front. It has Martin there with his iconic broom and the animals sharing the bowl of milk on the floor. It's a very relaxing image. I like it a great deal. He's the patron saint for harmonious race relations but hardly anyone acknowledges him...so I wanted to give a shout-out on my blog. Puccini for beginners (Rant)

I watched this movie for the first today while recuperating from my illness. I've heard about it before, but never worked up the nerve to sit through this romantic comedy until it popped up on Netflix. I gotta say...romcoms aren't my thing. But because it deals with lesbi issues, I thought I'd give it a try.

After watching the film I began to wonder: when did "bisexuality" become such a dirty word? Clearly, the characters engaged in bisexual behavior, but the word was never used...not once...in the entire film. The lesbian character was called "confused" when she chose to date a man. The fact that she could've been bisexual didn't even enter the conversation. It was, "No sweety, you're confused. A lesbian with a boyfriend is ridiculous!" Hmmm. That would be true if she was a lesbian, she would not have been interested in a man, correct...but she WAS attracted to the MAN and to the WOMAN, so...by logic, that makes her bisexual! Not fucking "confused." It was like...being "bisexual" wasn't even an option for her because, so clearly, a person can only be homosexual or heteronormative...you can't be attracted to both sexes, right?

And like most bisexual characters portrayed in film, she was a flighty, cheating, manipulative imbecile who didn't know what she wanted and seemed only interested in sex. She hurt everyone around her for her own selfish needs, and thought very little of commitment until the very end of the story.

Ugh! Gimme a break! I'm so tired of this stereotype. If it isn't bisexual erasure it's all-out biphobia! Bisexuals and Transgender people are constantly sidelined in the LGBTQIA community. It makes me so mad I want to distance myself from the movement. At least with bisexuals, we are constantly being told: "You're not really gay. You're just doing it for attention!" or "You're just a closeted lesbian/gay man! Bisexuality doesn't exist!"

*headdesk*

I'm tired of being told I'm not "gay enough." I really am. And this movie, as lighthearted and silly as it was, brings up a bigger issue here. I've been regarded with suspicion all my life. "What do you mean you like BOTH?! Just PICK a SIDE!" as if there is a "side." It's like being biracial in a way. You're told to pick a "side," to fit into a neat little box for people to categorize and label you.

I say, "Fuck your goddamn labels! I am me, my name is TK. Why can't you be satisfied with my name? What does it matter if I'm multiracial? What does it matter if I'm bisexual? Leave me the fuck alone!" But no one is satisfied with just my name.

Just yesterday, some Indian dude asked me what my ethnic origin was while I was waiting for my ticket at the airport. I hate that question. "What are you?!" I'm a human being, moron! Just like you. But I didn't say that, I said, "I'm American." But he wasn't satisfied with that--he pressed on, "No, no, you look Indian. You have an Indian face. Is one of your parents from India?"

Goddammit! How many times have I been asked: "are you MIXED?! What ARE you?!" Like I have to explain myself to complete strangers in order for them to proceed with how to "treat" me. The same thing goes for the gay community. It pisses me off.

I went to the doctor today. Turns out I have strep throat and anemia. Lovely. The VC will take a weeklong break until I feel better.

Ugh. I feel like complete and utter crap right now. I don't know if it's the flu or what, but I'm miserable! When I woke up this morning, my eyes were red, swollen, and watery. I assumed it was stress and moved on. Then as I drove home from school, I had the worst feeling of nausea I've ever had! I ran straight to the toilet. Gross. I've been battling bouts of nausea for the past three days...but this was entirely different! I'm sore...achey...and fatigued. I've been having awful headaches since last week.

I have a test tomorrow and...oh...I'm feeling nauseous again.

The Vegetarian Cannibal will be out of commission for a while. Please bear with me.

Status Update: 1/11

Like my cowboy? I like him a great deal. Especially his lovely tattoos and shiny belt buckle. *innocent smile* I don't usually go for cowboys but I made an exception for this hunky specimen.

Anyways, it has been a while since I've done a status update. So here's what I've accomplished.

Since my last status update, I have received several new publishers. I have a flash story acceptance at Sex and Murder Magazine, three political poems accepted at aaduna Press, a flash story published into an anthology at Daily Flashes of Erotica (I will do a giveaway on Valentines day!) and a single-title short story publication at Sapphire Blue Publishing.

I've been a busy girl, eh? I haven't updated by "Publication Credits" in quite a while. *sigh* I'll get on it when I'm motivated enough to do it.

Here's what I'm working on right now:

A historical young adult novel with a paranormal twist. I'm devoting all of my time toward this at the moment. I'm really excited about this story. I can't wait to sit down and start writing it. I haven't written a novel since high school, so it'll be a long project that will keep me busy for a while.

I also have two novellas that are finished--still polishing and editing. One is my Cirque Du Soleil inspired story, the other is a dark fantasy story. I've got my eye on a few publishers, but I gotta wipe the dirt and grime off my stories first. Neither are an easy "sell," so I'm tweaking accordingly. When I get the confidence to submit again, I'll redirect my energies. I haven't looked at these novellas in months! A part of me is afraid they won't get published. It's pretty stupid because I got just two rejections and already I'm quitting, LOL! I'll re-submit when I stop moping around like a child. (At least I can recognize when I'm being childish!)

That's what I got cooking so far. When I have more news, I'll let you know! Thank you guys for supporting me. Without you guys, I wouldn't be able to do what I do!
