Smexxxy Friday (Jude Law + Nia Long)

These two have nice chemistry don't you think? The things I would do to this white boy y'all...I like this scene a lot. Yeah, I was mostly inspired by that Daniel Tosh.0 video from the other week. Thought I'd show a serious WM/BW scene! Whoop Whoop!

Goodnight Moon...

Can I share a story with you? It's one I've always wanted to tell somebody...but since no one has ever asked, here it is: A long time ago, when I was just a small stupid kid, my father sat me on his knee and pointed up the full moon with a big smile on his face. "You wanna know a secret?" He waited until I had looked up at the sky before he continued. "Did you know the full moon can drive people crazy?  Her name is Luna, and that is why all of the Lunatics are her children. I was a lunatic once. One day, you will be too." My father didn't realize it at the time, but he was imprinting a memory onto me that would last forever. I had never heard of the moon turning people into lunatics, but as I looked up at the brilliant white orb in the sky, I began to imagine why. "When I was your age," he continued, still pointing skyward,"I fell in love for the first time. I thought the moon was a beautiful woman and I would stare at her for hours alone in my room at night. Everybody laughed at me but I didn't care." He smiled at me, his face now bathed in soft blue moonlight. This man did not look my father anymore. In the eerie pale glow, he looked like some sort of angelic creature. I had never seen nor will I ever see my father in the same reverent way again. I remember my heart pounding. I remember thinking the moon was really driving me crazy or distorting my vision in some way. The moment was too perfect. I was too ridiculously happy for any of this to be real. I wanted to see my father in that soft white light forever. I didn't want the moment to go away. But it did. And my father stood up and gently unglued me from his knee. "The moon is your real mother, VC," he said quietly. "Don't ever forget it. That is the face of the only woman I have ever truly loved." Then he brushed the dirt off his jeans and walked back inside the house, leaving me dazed and bewildered on the grass.

...The moon was my real mother. And all her children were lunatics. What a concept.

Maybe I am a lunatic. Perhaps my father was right. Whether I am Luna's daughter or not, I will always love the moon. She will always be a source of creative wonder for me. Tonight I will look upon her again and ask for courage and inspiration. I just have to believe that I can tell my story through my novels. I just have to keep dreaming...

La Ronde Lunaire

It was the top rated comment on youtube that made me put this video up on my blog:

To me, the wolf symbolizes never ending loneliness. He moves on in life, searching for somebody, but no matter what, he is alone. It's an eternal struggle, a race against time that can never be won. Or maybe he wants to be lonely. Perhaps he runs from company to preserve his isolation.

It touched me. Because whenever I look at this video, I see my main character running into nowhere. I want people to love her as much as I do. But I'm starting to doubt she will get the chance to share her voice...or if a mass audience would even accept a character like her. Yeah, she's black. Yeah, she's gay. Yeah, she's a slave in the 1600s. Yeah, she practices Voodoo and Paganism. Yeah, she doesn't fit the traditional "werewolf" conventions. But so what? Can't people look beyond their preconceptions and just accept the story for what it is?

Perhaps it's the PMDD talking...I dunno. But when I look at this video, I just see my main character running away from me. I begin to question whether or not I have the talent to get my book published...and then I get depressed. I am 23yrs old and quickly losing my bright-eyed optimism. I'm realizing for the first time that there is a great possibility that I will fail. I might never accomplish my dream to make it on a bookshelf someday. I might never become the "real writer" I've always imagined myself to be.

Failure. It's a word I'm familiarizing myself with. And it doesn't feel good.

Smexxxy Friday

Lust. Ah, the sin that keeps on giving. I think horny villains are fascinating. They always blame the object of their affections and try to destroy them. Have a hellfire weekend, minions. Without...y'know...the jealous rage killing and stuff.

Cannibalistic Confessions

I'm a sick fuck. Granted, I've been aware of this fact since...well...forever, but I comfort myself in the idea that there's a little sadist in everybody though, right? I'm just a little more honest and up front about my homicidal urges than most. I've noticed that writer's block tends to increase my antisocial/aggressive habits. So to abstain from cannibalism, I watch horror movies.

I get a morbid thrill out of watching fellow writers suffer. So here's the roster of movies I'll be re-watching this week:

1. 1408
2. Misery
3. Donnie Darko (Is he even a writer? Doesn't matter)
4. Stranger than fiction
5. Whisper of the heart (OK...this is a little kid's movie where nothing gory happens, but of my favorite movies about writers)

In the interim, I won't do another blog post until this Friday. Please continue your weekly routine without me, minions.

Status Update 6/12

So I have officially started writing the sequel to the next book. The second book is titled Witching Moon, and it is going to center around the Oyster River Massacre of 1694, two years after the first book ends. Kateri aka the Lily of the Mohawks, is going to be an important character in this book! Frontenac will also make an appearance. I'll introduce more new characters than old ones...but Tituba's nemesis, Abigail Williams, returns to rear her ugly head in a big way. Witching Moon will be less about American colonial life and more about French-Indian-English conflicts. The French-Indian War is just a few decades away and tensions between our young nations is just warming up. Naturally Tituba has to be the catalyst that sets off the war, right? Witching Moon will also be more of a traditional "love story" than the first book. I'm not going to give too much away but there will Lots of it. With men AND women. Tituba does it all!

Ideas for the third book are still swirling around in my head but I know there's going to be a pirate ship and an introduction to New Spain. I want to cover ALL of the budding American regions: New England, Acadia (New France), and finally New Spain. I'm reading these fascinating books called "Florida's Frontiers" by Paul E. Hoffman and "Historic Native Peoples of Texas" by William C. Foster. Haven't decided WHERE in New Spain the third book will take place but it will either be in Florida or Texas.

If and when I find an agent, I'll let you guys know. As of right now, I'm still querying for the first book, Witching Tree. Less than two months into the querying process and I've tried 25 agents. One request. Nine form rejections. More than a dozen no responses. Whew. Gonna keep this up until August. Hopefully I can find an agent before 2013--but I'm doubtful.

Crushing on your characters Part 2

Male-Female relationships are interesting. They just are. If you put a man and a woman alone in a room together and watch them from a psych student POV, you'll see what I'm talking about. Of all the dyadic combinations in human interpersonal interactions, I think opposite-sex dyads are the most entertaining to watch.

Now I already wrote about this stuff in my original post. I was trying to explain the cocktail of characters/personality traits that shaped the heterosexual love interest in my story. So when I ran across this song on youtube I knew I had to post it up! Shang is definitely crush-worthy and he shares similarities to the character in my novel.

Shang and Mulan have a very interesting relationship because for three fourths of the movie, Shang and everyone else believes Mulan to be male. Anyway, I like Shang because he's a no-nonsense badass. And I like men who are obvious alpha types who put themselves on the same hierarchal level as women. Despite his hypermasculine status, Shang doesn't "coddle" Mulan or try to act in a chivalrous manner. Their relationship is unique in that Mulan never needs/expects Shang to ride in and "rescue her" (odd for a Disney film, I know!) They are perfectly interdependent. You might also argue that Shang is gay since he is attracted to Mulan before he realizes she's a girl, hahaha...but that's a different blog post altogether. Is the movie Mulan kinda sexist? Yeah...probably. But at least the heroine is allowed to 1. save the world without turning into a damsel in distress in the process and 2. get the guy without "deferring" to traditional gender roles.

I guess I should mention that the homosexual love interest in my novel is based on a combination of girls/women I loved through school. Some of them were my teachers... Maybe another blog post.

Smexxxy Friday (Mya)

Holy mother of...when I first saw Mya in this video, I was 13 or 14. I wanted to do my hair just like her. I wanted to get a lip and nose piercing just like her. I wanted to learn how to tap dance just like her. I read magazines with her face on them. I bought CDs, stalked internet photos...for weeks!!! I was...obsessed with this woman. I still kinda am. Good god. She's still so beautiful to me. And my heart still pounds whenever I look at her. Ahhhh... *insert squealy fangirl sounds* Fuck, if you can't see how hot this girl is...I just give up.
