Django Unchained

So with all the hullabaloo surrounding Quentin Tarantino's latest movie, the boyfriend and I decided to see it yesterday. And you know what? Although there was a stupid amount of violence, rap music, and slow-mo dog-mauling montages, I liked it. Admittedly, blood splatter doesn't offend me. After a certain point I did find the gun shooting scenes monotonous and uninspired. However if I had to pick my favorite aspect of the film, it would be Samuel L. Jackson's oily "Uncle Tom" performance. Leonardo DiCaprio did a great job as the villain and Christoph Waltz genuinely surprised me as the good guy. All in all, I think the movie was well-acted and provocative. The use of the "n-word" didn't faze me. After all...this is a movie about slavery.

And that's where my movie review ends and my philosophic musings begin. Feel free to stop reading at this point because I can feel a rant simmering inside me.

I chose to open this blog post with Spike Lee for a reason. I think he's being a little ridiculous for trashing a movie he openly admits to never seeing, but he also has a point. I just happen to think his point is short-sighted. My beef is with America's obsession with racial politicking and also our knee-jerk reaction to gun violence. The lastest American tragedy in Connecticut has everyone up in arms about the wrong issues. Censuring Tarantino simply because he has violent gun scenes will not fix America's gun problem. Just like censuring the "n-word" out of books like Huckleberry Finn will not  fix America's racism problem. C'mon people! Think BIG PICTURE!

I'm annoyed. We're so quick to "blame the media" for every little thing rather than sitting down with lawmakers and community leaders to discuss the weaknesses in our legislature, mental healthcare, and educational system. I guess it's easier to point our fingers at artists rather than implement responsible, mature policies that might actually make a difference in our national and state governments. This problem is so much bigger than a few stupid scenes in a movie like Django. We need adult conversations about change. Not knee-jerk reactions or scape-goating.

Going for gold

Have you guys been watching the Olympics? Gosh, I always cry when I watch these athletes. I guess I'm just an over inflated bag of estrogen and sentimentalism. I was so impressed by little Gabby Douglas! She and the Fab 5 won gold for USA! Hurray!

The Olympics shows everyone what we all can strive to be. It's about doing amazing things and accomplishing greatness. It's inspiring. I feel some of that can-do spirit has brushed off on me. Got a full request in my inbox. Go USA!

Join me this Saturday...

I'm interviewing book narrator extraordinaire, Drake Stone this week! He is promoting his most recent book, "Best Gay Erotica 2011"  from Cleis Press and I am stoked! I must admit, I've never interviewed (let alone spoken to) a book narrator before! So I'm super excited to have this guy on my blog! I can't believe my luck!  I took a quick listen to some of his samples today--holy cow! Drake's voice is really awesome!

I guess I didn't know what I was expecting. To be honest, I've never listened to a book before but it's one of those things I've been meaning to try. Anyway, I wonder how someone prepares for a role like that! Although I write erotica I doubt I have enough balls to stand in front of a microphone at a recording studio and read it aloud! Hahahaha! I'd be blushing like a sunset! I gotta ask Drake about that when he's over here!

Anyway, he's going to sit down with me this weekend so we can talk about his books. :) I hope you guys will join us here on Saturday! *happy dance* Yay!

It's finished! *happy dance*

Yeah...remember that story I was telling you about? You know, the one I had serious writer's block with for like...3 months? Yeah. I finished it. My first novel is DONE! Finished! The Ended. Holy crap! 85 thousand words of my heart and soul...all complete.

Oh gosh! What an incredible feeling!

Yes, I still have to plot the sequel but DAMN! I'm just so happy it is finished! At the moment I am requesting beta readers. I have one beta helping me out already (*waves* Hi, Theresa!) but I'm gonna need one more before I think I'll be ready to start querying agents.

*happy sigh* Yeah. Being a writer today is awesome. :) I'll give more details later.

Allergies

I hate having allergies...but not for the reason you think. Most people are allergic to pollen, dust, cat dander, etc, but nope, not me. I have to be allergic to wonderful things like fruit. Yes. Fruit. I am allergic to all kinds of fruit except citrus foods.

Why? Because I have this thing called Fruit Pollen Syndrome. Which sucks. Because I love eating fruit. *Sigh* And as a vegetarian, fruits and veggies make up most of my diet! :(

I'm also allergic to latex. So no wild kinky sex costumes for me, unfortunately.

My New Pen Name

So I've decided to change my pen name. How does this affect you? It doesn't. I never went by my real name away and I already sign a lot of my blog posts with "VC" as it is. "VC" obviously stands for "Vegetarian Cannibal."

Since I write "VC" on just about everything I am just christening myself with that name to spare everyone and myself from further confusion.

Starting (ha!) six months or so ago, I've been going exclusively by Vicy Cross. So...yeah. It's Vicy Cross now. Pronounced VEE-CEE (like TV) Not Vicky.

Carry on!

Harold Camping Predicts End of the World, Again

Harold Camping Predicts End of the World, Again October 21, people. Prepare for the apocalypse!

How do these "Doomsday Guys" stay in business? I mean, how hasn't Camping lost all credibility after being wrong the first time? Can these "prophets" just reschedule and reschedule until finally they get it right or something? I dunno... but if I'm going place a bet, I'm going with the Mayans, baby!

I've already decided that on December 21, 2012, I'm doing to have an "END OF THE WORLD" party! It's going to be kickass. Beer. Naked ladies. Human sacrifices. Oh yeah. Every cannibal's wet dream!

Cheers from the Vegetarian Cannibal!
